Hotel
Babylon
The clip of hotel Babylon that we watched in lesson shows
immigration officers coming in to find all of the illegal immigrants. The main
immigration officer is the antagonist as he
has come to take away the workers that are illegal immigrant, this is very
important as this is used to make the viewer have feelings for the illegal
immigrants so this is key to the way that we see the scene. The lady at the end
that starts arguing with them taking him away is the protagonist
and is trying to make them let him go. Also they don’t treat the man they are
taking with any respect as they drag him out of the place like an animal and it
makes him look worthless, when the lady asks them to let him go he reply’s with
its all a game this makes him make it sound like they are all worthless and
have no values and it’s just a game to catch them so it makes it sound like
they are animals and the immigration officers are hunters.
Camera shots
The first shot is a close up
shot on the immigration officer and it gives this image that he is an
evil man as his face is very strata and he does not smile so he is here for an
important reason. When the antagonist gets to the hotel desk the light shines
on to the reception lady’s face and she looks like she is relaxed and happy
where as when the light gets pointed at the antagonist we see him as a not very
nice person who is very strait to the point and needs to get his way. Also when
all of the immigrants are hiding in the staff room it gives a wide angle shot that gets them all in and makes
them look like a family. it Also a hand-held camera
is used when they are running around the building this makes it feel
like you are ruining as well as it feels like you are looking through someone
else’s eyes. Also steady camera is used as
even when they are running it is very smooth this allows the user to watch a
smooth picture but also know they are running. There is also a focus pull when Ibrahim is caught this is used to
show his sudden feeling of danger, when the antagonist just sees it as a game
and that the immigrant is worthless. There is also ben who is a black gentleman
that is dressed in a smarty manor not like the immigrant workers
Editing
Fast pace editing is used
to create the tension when they are all running to hide from the immigration
officer also it shows their facial expressions and you can see that all of them
are scared and don’t want to be caught. When the nock on the door it zooms in when she opens it this builds up
attention to make you want to know who is at the door. A cut is used when she jumps from being in the staff
room to being in reception this builds up tension for the user and makes you
realise how important the immigrants are to her as she wants them to let him
go.
Sound
The backing music at the start when you see the antagonist
walk in is very upbeat and makes it feel fast paced when he walks in like he
needs to do it quickly so none of the illegal immigrants can escape, it also
makes him come across as a lot eviller. Also when they are hiding in the staff
room the background music that is on all the
way through stops when they lock themselves in the staff room but when they
realise one person is missing an eerie sound starts to play to add tension. Diegetic sound was used so this is when the sound
has a meaning on the screen so when they were running you could hear the
footsteps this shows diegetic sound. Non diegetic sound
was also used when there were bits that had tension in them they used the
non-diegetic sound to make them more tense. Synchronised
sound is used when they are running as the sound of footsteps is
expected as they are running. Also sound bridging is
used as there is background music that plays all the way through the clip.
Mise-en-scence
The hotels staff that you would see for example the people
behind the office where white and dressed smartly whereas the immigrants where
not dressed formally and where in the background where people would not see
them very often, the jobs that they had made them look like they had no other
choice of what job they could have as they were not very intelligent, this was
all proved wrong when the lady passed out in the staff room that they were
hiding in and one of the cleaners new exactly what to do and she said “I was
not always a cleaner” this shows that he was a doctor and is very intelligent
so the stereotype that is given to them is
incorrect as they are very can be very clever. Also at the start you see this
very nice smart hotel and then they show you what is really going on in the
background when the immigrants are all hiding in the staff room. Also you can
see the different statuses they have when
you see their uniforms for example the immigrants uniform is very basic but
everyone else’s uniform is very smart.
in my improved version above I have added in more detail to my explanations and I have also talked about the way ethnicity is shown in the clip. I have used some more relevant terminology to back up my ideas.
ReplyDeleteThis is much better in terms of discussion and accurate use of terminology. EBI: You could link your ideas to the theories relating to stereotyping to make your argument more convincing and specific.
